Dhaka University Students Await DUCSU Election Revival
DHAKA – The student body of Dhaka University (DU) is once again buzzing with anticipation over the potential revival of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) elections. For decades, the student union, a cornerstone of political and social life on campus, has remained inactive, leaving a significant void in student representation.
The last DUCSU election was held in March 2019 after a 29-year hiatus. While it was a landmark event, it was met with mixed reactions. Many students and political groups raised allegations of vote-rigging, campus violence, and other irregularities. The results of the election saw a panel led by the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) winning most of the positions, with a few notable exceptions, including the vice president (VP) and social welfare secretary, who came from an opposing panel.
Since that election, DUCSU has once again gone dormant. Students and faculty members have consistently called for a new election to be held in a free and fair manner. Proponents argue that a functioning student union is crucial for addressing student issues, promoting a democratic culture on campus, and serving as a platform for future national leaders.
However, the path to a new election is fraught with challenges. The university administration and various student organizations have different viewpoints on the necessary prerequisites and the ideal timing. Many students are skeptical that a truly fair election can be held without addressing the allegations of past irregularities and ensuring the campus environment is free from intimidation.
The demand for a fresh DUCSU election is a persistent one, reflecting the deep-seated desire among students for a voice in their own governance. As the university administration considers the next steps, the future of student politics at Dhaka University hangs in the balance, with many hoping that a new DUCSU election will finally bring genuine democratic representation back to the campus.
